When should you seek emergency help immediately?
If one side of your body suddenly becomes numb or weak, one side of your face droops, or you suddenly develop difficulty speaking, seek emergency help immediately, even if the symptoms have gone away. Do not wait for a clinic appointment.
Hand numbness
Hand numbness is a symptom, not the name of a specific disease. If it recurs or persists, its cause needs to be assessed.
What information helps with diagnosis?
Note which fingers are affected, when the symptoms started, and whether they get worse at night or during work. Also tell your doctor about neck pain, hand weakness or dropping objects. This information, together with an examination, helps determine which investigations are needed.
Does every case of hand numbness need surgery?
No. One cause is pressure on the median nerve in the passage through the wrist; this condition is called carpal tunnel syndrome. For some people with this condition, a night splint that keeps the wrist straight or changes to activities are treatment options; others may need different investigations or treatment. The choice of treatment depends on the cause and severity of the problem.
Questions to ask at your appointment
- Which cause best fits my symptoms?
- Do I need nerve tests or any other investigations?
- Which symptoms mean I should return sooner?
- If surgery is being considered, what are its aims and limitations?
