A meniscus tear: how do we choose between treatments?

When do you need urgent medical assessment?

If your knee is locked, you cannot move it, or you cannot put weight on the leg, seek urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for a routine clinic appointment.

Meniscus tear

The words “meniscus tear” in an MRI report do not, on their own, determine whether you need surgery. The type of tear, symptoms, daily activities and examination findings all affect the treatment decision.

Are all tears alike?

No. The meniscus is tissue inside the knee that helps distribute pressure. A tear may follow a recent injury or develop through gradual changes in the tissue. The type, location and size of a tear matter when choosing treatment and considering whether it can be repaired.

Can treatment start without surgery?

Many tears do not need immediate surgery. For some patients, changing activities and rehabilitation are part of treatment. If symptoms continue despite treatment, return for a review of the treatment plan.

Questions to ask at your appointment

  • Is my tear recent, or is it related to wear in the tissue?
  • Is nonsurgical treatment suitable for me?
  • If surgery is needed, is the aim to repair the meniscus or remove the damaged part?
  • How does the recovery plan depend on the type of surgery?
